I told Kat that she should bring us home -- Ateneo-Motolite head coach Oliver Almadro on hitter Kat Tolentino
Third year player Kat Tolentino found renewed confidence with the trust and faith given to her by Ateneo-Motolite head coach Oliver Almadro.
The Fil-Canadian has been consistently delivering on offense for the lady Eagles in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.
“I’m giving assignments to my players. I told Kat that she should bring us home,” said Almadro. “Kumbaga ang importante rito magkaroon ng confidence ‘yung teammates niya to her and siya rin sa sarili niya.”
And Tolentino did her job well, scoring 24 points in Ateneo-Motolite’s 25-21, 17-25, 19-25, 25-14, 15-7, win over PetroGazz that gave the Lady Eagles their second win in as many games.
But the Tolentino was quick to downplay her role and instead gave credit to her teammates for working well under the system of Almadro, which defined the roles of each player and its importance for the team to be able to play fluidly.
“When he says ‘know your role’ it’s just that each player has their strength and weaknesses and we really look to capitalize on each player and every person has a very big role,” explained Tolentino.
“Because if one person doesn’t do their role and it makes it harder for other people. Even if it’s small, Coach O always says that it’s important,” she added.
Tolentino’s role is to provide points and in the past two games she has been leading the squad with an average of 22 points per game.
And those matches weren’t easy ones as the Lady Eagles faced veteran-laden Pocari Sweat-Air Force and the Angels.
“For me, my strength is obviously spiking but of course I want to contribute in any way I can,” added Tolentino, who had 20 kills, three kill blocks and an ace against PetroGazz.
The hitter stressed that whatever numbers she has been putting up, it all came from the hard work of her teammates.
“I wouldn’t be able to do my role without the liberos or the people who receive so definitely their role is just as important as mine,” she said. “Maybe they don’t get noticed as much but for me I wouldn’t be able to spike without their sets or their digs.”
Ateneo-Motolite will take on another seasoned team in BanKo on Sunday.
