Itís weird until now -- Valdez on facing former teammates
Weíre just really happy na we grow sa mga teams na napuntahan namin talaga. I think it was character building also yung mga decisions namin after college -- Alyssa Valdez

It may have been years since Alyssa Valdez played alongside her former Ateneo de Manila University teammates but the Creamline spiker still feels weird everytime she faces them on the  other side of the net.

“Inaaway nila ako, hahaha!” Valdez joked Wednesday after the Cool Smashers won their fifth straight game in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.

Valdez led the Cool Smashers to an emphatic win over BanKo, 26-24, 25-13, 25-21, for a share of the lead with their victim and Ateneo-Motolite at 5-1 win-loss slate.

The Creamline superstar went up against other former Lady Eagles standouts Dzi Gervacio, Ella De Jesus, Mae Tajima, Amy Ahomiro, libero Gizelle Tan and setter Jem Ferrer.

Valdez played with them during her five-year stay in Ateneo and back in 2016 in the defunct V-League Open Conference under the BaliPure banner.

“It’s weird until now cause when we’re together inside the court it’s just parang sobrang relax lang talaga coz you know you got each other’s back,” said Valdez. “We’re just really happy na we grow sa mga teams na napuntahan namin talaga. I think it was character building also yung mga decisions namin after college.”

After her stint with BaliPure, Valdez transferred to Bureau of Customs in the V-League Reinforced Conference before moving to Creamline last year. The other Lady Eagles, meanwhile, formed the Perlas Spikers.

“We’re really happy for each other and we’re really supporting each other. Siyempre ‘pag kalaban naman laban muna mamaya lagot nanaman kami away away nanaman kami.”

“Kidding aside we’re just really happy na nakikita namin yung growth ng isa’t isa,” she continued.

Valdez and her crew handed BanKo its first loss of the season while extending their winning streak.

“Definitely confidence booster talaga siya kasi mahirap din this conference kasi two rounds you wouldn’t know kung ano ‘yung magiging game and yung ilalaro din ng kalaban mo,” said Valdez. “The more wins na you get early stage ng tournament better sa team niyo.”

But knowing her former teammates, Valdez braces for a tougher game in their rematch in the second round on November 17 in Cagayan de Oro.

“We know na BanKo will bounce back siyempre sobrang veteran team din talaga sila so good luck sa next game namin definitely babawi’t babawi talaga sila,” she closed.
