Alyssa Valdez will take on the new breed of Lady Eagles in a marquee match that stakes the hold of the lead.
Former Queen Eagle Alyssa Valdez will get a chance to test the mettle of the new breed of Ateneo de Manila University volleybelles when Creamline shoots to end the first round of eliminations with its sixth straight win.
Valdez and the Cool Smashers will meet surging Ateneo-Motolite in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference on Sunday at the Baliwag Star Arena.
Action begins at 6:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
“Very excited (makalaban ang Ateneo) siympre pero iba pa rin kapag ikaw ang may suot ng jersey (ng Ateneo), ‘yung pride na dala mo every game,” said the three-time UAAP MVP, who led the Lady Eagles to back-to-back UAAP titles in Season 76 and 77. “But now, we hope na may matutunan lang din talaga sila sa amin.”
Valdez, who graduated in Season 78, left a winning legacy to the Lady Eagles and made her mark and influence on now Ateneo-Motolite veteran stars in Bea De Leon, Maddie Madayag, setter Deanna Wong and Kat Tolentino, who during the Creamline star’s time with the Katipunan-based squad was nursing a knee injury.
Aside from Valdez, former Ateneo setter Jia Morado will also get a chance to face her college teammates with her showdown with playmaker Wong also highlighting the duel.
The Cool Smashers are on a winning roll after dropping their first game, stringing five straight victories for a three-way tie at the top spot alongside Ateneo-Motolite and BanKo with 5-1 win-loss slates.
“I’m really proud of the girls and they are leaders on their own ways din. I’m just really happy na maganda rin ang itinatakbo ng team nila,” said Valdez of Ateneo-Motolite, which is on a three-game winning run. “Grabe makikita natin na really heartstrong until the end kahit anong mangyari, veteran team, nilalabanan talaga nila. It shows na maganda talaga ang itinatakbo ng team nila.”
The Cool Smashers are coming off a straight sets win over BanKo last Wednesday while the Lady Eagles outlasted Tacloban in five sets the last time out.
And Valdez braces for a tough battle.
“For sure they’re gonna fight hard kasi siyempre kahit mga ate nila kami gusto nilang maipakita na may natutunan sila sa amin,” said Valdez.
