Ateneo-Motolite exacted its revenge over first round tormentor Creamline to take the solo lead.
BATANGAS CITY --- Ateneo-Motolite came in full force Sunday in its Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference elimination round rematch against title favorite Creamline.
Fielding their full arsenal, the Lady Eagles exacted revenge over their first round tormentors as they snapped the Cool Smashers’ six-game winning run with a 25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12, win to claim then solo lead at the Batangas City Coliseum here.
Ateneo-Motolite captured its second straight win to improve to 7-2 win-loss record.
The Lady Eagles completed a sweep of their back-to-back weekend schedule and scored a payback over Creamline, which defeated them in straight sets last week. Ateneo-Motolite faced the Cool Smashers in their first meeting without started Maddie Madayag, Kat Tolentino and Ponggay Gaston, who were then completing their community immersion as part of their academic requirements.
Tolentino broke a 12-12 tie in the fifth frame with a strong smash before former Queen Eagle Alyssa Valdez committed a crucial attack error by putting too much power on her attack. Rookie Vanessa Gandler introduced herself to Valdez with a solid kill block on her to seal the win.
“We’re two sets up so ‘yun ang importante sa amin, ‘yung mental toughness, ‘yung maturity,” said Ateneo-Motolite coach Oliver Almadro. “‘Yung ganoon matututo kami doon eh, so pagbalik kailangan hindi (kami magpabaya).”
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila it will not be given to us easy, we will really have to work hard for it. Just a point, a championship point, pinaghihirapan ‘yan. What more kung ang kalaban mo is a professional champion team,” he added. “If it’s a fluke it’s ok for us, if it’s tsamba we’ll take it. What’s important is natututo kami sa kanila.”
Tolentino scored 22 points off 18 attacks, three kill blocks and an ace while Bea De Leon finished wityh 15 markers for the Lady Eagles. Madayag had nine markers while Deanna Wong tallied 38 excellent sets for Ateneo-Motolite.
Down, 6-8, in the fifth set, Valdez scored two of Creamline’s next three points to take a one-point lead. The former Queen Eagle answered with back-to-back hits after Ponggay Gaston’s hit.
Gaston fired back but Valdez hammered another kill to put the Cool Smashers up, 12-10. De Leon scored for the Lady Eagles in the next play and Valdez sent her attack wide that tied the frame at 12.
Valdez poured 32 points - all from attacks - in a lost cause for Creamline, which dropped to 6-2 slate and slid to second spot tied with idle BanKo.
Jema Galanza got 13 markers while returning players Pau Soriano and Michele Gumabao posted 11 and nine markers, respectively, for the Cool Smashers.
