Sinabihan lang ako ng assistant coach ko na mag-angas para mailabas ko yung laro ko wala namang meaning ‘yun. Charot! -- Jema Galanza
BATANGAS CITY --- They may be ‘special friends’ outside of the volleyball court but Jema Galanza and Deanna Wong are fierce competitors whenever they face each other at the opposite sides of the net.
The two showed it Sunday in the marquee Ateneo-Motolite and Creamline clash in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the Batangas City Coliseum.
Galanza started out hot for the Cool Smashers and gave a little extra swagger early on to pump up her game and fuel her teammates.
Wong was one of the recipients of the former Queen Falcon’s antics as she gave the Lady Eagle a smile after scoring off her block attempt.
“Wala okay lang. Hindi kasi sinabihan lang ako ng assistant coach ko na mag-angas para mailabas ko yung laro ko wala namang meaning ‘yun. Charot!” Galanza said in a jest.
But Wong got back at the Galanza in the second set as the Ateneo-Motolite setter snuck up a well-timed kill block before returning the favor on the Cool Smasher open spiker.
With the game going into a decider, Galanza had her chance of getting back at Wong. Down 6-8 in the fifth set, Galanza scored an off the block hit off the hands of Wong.
Galanza sent a message to Wong with a stare down followed by a smile that added more color to an already intense game.
“Hindi na nakaulit (ng block). Hindi na siya makakaulit. Hindi ka na makakaulit, joke lang ‘yun,” said a giggly Galanza.
But it was Wong who had the last laugh after she and the Lady Eagles escaped with a 25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12 win to move up at solo lead with a 7-2 win-loss record while snapping Galanza and the Cool Smashers’ six-game winning streak to slide at second spot with 6-2 slate tied with BanKo.
After the cliffhanger match and stare down contest, everything remains well for the ‘special friends.’
“Bineso ko siya sinabi ko nice game ganun,” said a blushing Galanza.
