MALOLOS, Bulacan --- BanKo’s experience, composure, and veteran smarts proved to be too much for Ateneo-Motolite to handle.
Despite playing under constant pressure from the youthful Lady Eagles backed by a loud partisan crowd that trooped the Malolos Sports and Convention Center, the Perlas Spikers were unfazed as they halted the Lady Eagles’ four-game rampage with a cold-blooded, 26-24, 25-22, 25-16, sweep Saturday to wrest the hold of the lead in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.
Just like in their first meeting that also went BanKo’s way in dominating fashion, former Lady Eagle Dzi Gervacio delivered the hits that hurt the most as the Perlas Spikers schooled Ateneo-Motolite for their third straight win that hiked their record to 8-2.
Gervacio did most the damage with 14 points coming of 12 kills and two kill blocks while Kathy Bersola had 13 markers for BanKo. Amanda Villanueva filled the stats with nine attacks and two aces for 11 points laced with 11 digs and five excellent receptions for the Perlas Spikers.
“Sabi ko naman sa kanila basta sa experience, mas may experience naman kami kaysa sa kanila (Ateneo-Motolite),” said BanKo coach Dong Dela Cruz. “Nilaro lang namin ang game namin.”
The Perlas Spikers got quite a scare in the opening set as the Lady Eagles kept the frame close and were able for reach set point, 24-23. BanKo showed nerves of steel to force a deuce before eventually the frame.
Tied at 21 in the second frame, Gervacio delivered a crushing hit before Ateneo-Motolite committed back-to-back errors that gave Perlas Spikers a 24-21 lead. Jules Samonte saved a set point for the Lady Eagles before Gervacio sealed the set with a hit at the middle.
With their confidence drained, Ateneo-Motolite was easy picking for BanKo in the third. The Perlas Spikers were never threatened in the third set and even built a 24-14 advantage.
The Lady Eagles slid to 9-3 card with only Kat Tolentino scoring in double figures with 13 points.
