PVL: Perlas Spikers cash in on ‘super proxy’ Villanueva
It was challenging lang because kasi parang she’s part of the franchise player for us so filling in for the position for her is a big challenge for me -- Amanda Villanueva on filling in for Nicole Tiamzon

Amanda Villanueva’s role for most of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference is to fill in for her injured BanKo teammates.

But every time head coach Dong Dela Cruz calls her number, the former Adamson Queen Falcon never fails to deliver.

Villanueva showed her vintage form on Wednesday as she led the way for the Perlas Spikers’ formal entry into the Final Four.

Pitching in for injured Nicole Tiamzon, Villanueva poured 22 points in BanKo’s 27-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20, win over Pocari Sweat-Air Force that handed the Perlas Spikers the second best-of-three semifinals ticket to join league-leading Ateneo-Motolite.

“For me kasi nag-focus lang talaga ako sa game na ito kasi this is our key to getting to the Final Four,” said Villanueva, who helped BanKo recover from a sorry straight sets loss to PetroGazz last Sunday. “It’s a big game for us knowing na natalo kami last time and we really had a bad day in that game at that time. Sa akin na isip ko lang it was just a bad game not a bad season. So there’s more chance for us.”

Villanueva started for the Perlas Spikers with Tiamzon still nursing a right middle finger injury she sustained in a freak accident after she got her finger caught on her car door.

“It was challenging lang because kasi parang she’s part of the franchise player for us so filling in for the position for her is a big challenge for me,” said Villanueva, who slammed 17 attacks with three aces and two kill blocks.

“Kailangan magampanan ko ang responsibilities na ginagawa niya or more. I can’t be less than what she’s giving, di ba?” added Villanueva, who also played great floor defense with 15 excellent receptions. “Kasi sa akin ibinigay kailangan gampanan ko yan.”

Villanueva, early in the conference, also played as proxy for injured skipper Sue Roces.

"Kanina ang iniisip ko lang, even si Kuya na-injured siya di ba yung wrist nya? Ako yun opposite. Iniisip ko lang lagi just play my game don’t think about their game o kung ano man ang mako-contribute nila basta ako game ko ang iisipin ko and how I could help the team," she said.

The Perlas Spikers improved to 9-3 win-loss record and will play Creamline in Cagayan De Oro on Saturday.
