PVL: Angels inch closer to last semis spot
PetroGazz moved a step closer from claiming the last semifinals ticket.

PetroGazz showed nerves of steel in coming back from six points down in the fourth set to silence Ateneo-Motolite, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23, and move a step closer to clinching the last Final Four berth in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan Saturday.

New recruit Rossan Fajardo provided the spark in the Angels’ impressive comeback from a 10-16 deficit while veteran Cai Baloaloa delivered the finishing blows, including the last two points of PetroGazz in the resounding win that hiked its win-loss record to 7-5.

Baloaloa posted 13 markers with 10 coming off attacks while Paneng Mercado had 12 for the Angels. Jonah Sabete registered 10 points with 15 excellent receptions and 11 digs for PetroGazz, which can secure the last semis ticket with a win over listless Adamson-Akari on Sunday in the last of their back-to-back weekend assignments.

“Very important (ang panalo) so medyo relax na tayo going into the next two games. Very big win of course,” said Angels coach Jerry Yee, whose squad extended the wedge that separates them from other semis slot pursuers Tacloban (6-7) and Pocari Sweat-Air Force (5-7).

Down by six in the fourth set, Fajardo, who was tapped as replacement for NCAA-bound Maritess Pablo, nailed three aces in the Angels’ 7-0 blitz that put the Angels ahead, 17-16. The Lady Eagles again went up, 23-21, off a Maddie Madayag hit.

Alyssa Layug sparked PetroGazz’s amazing closing run with a hit before Baloaloa’s finishing blows including the game-clinching hit from the right side that rolled on top of the net before dropping a few inches from the sideline.

The semis-bound Lady Eagles closed the elims with a 10-4 slate.

Kat Tolentino led Ateneo-Motolite with 15 points, Madayag had 13 while Bea De Leon finished with 10. Rookie Vanessa Gandler was limited to only three points for the Lady Eagles, who gave away 34 points off errors.
