I know we're inconsistent today because of so many things -- Oliver Almadro
Ateneo-Motolite suffered a four-set loss at the hands of a veteran team in PetroGazz Saturday night.
The Lady Eagles might have failed to close the elimination round of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference on a high note but head coach Oliver Almadro still commended his wards for playing their hearts out.
“I'm not that furious with my team,” said Almadro after Ateneo-Motolite’s 25-19, 21-25, 21-25, 23-25 loss to the Angels. “Yes, every game is important, but we're trying kasi some things this week. So, 'yung focus namin is preparing some things.”
The semifinals-bound Lady Eagles absorbed their fourth loss in 14 outings as PetroGazz, which is on its final drive for the last Final Four seat, exacted revenge on Ateneo-Motolite.
Almadro admitted that his wards failed to maintain the same intensity they had in the first set but added that some of his graduating key players were coming off a school activity.
“'Yung game ngayon, siguro hindi namin na-maintain 'yung consistency namin ng first set,” he said. “Importante sa PetroGazz 'yung game so advantage sa kanila 'yun. We really have to be consistent pa.”
The Lady Eagles committed 34 errors and squandered a 16-10 and 23-21 lead in the fourth set.
“I know we're inconsistent today because of so many things. I know si Kat (Tolentino) and Ponggay (Gasto), and Maddie (Madayag) came from a recollection,” Almadro added. “I admit naman na we're not 100 percent today.
"But we have to cope with that kind of situation kasi it will happen sa UAAP na may ganoong stress with school commitments. It's hard for us as student-athletes, but have to try our best to be consistent.”
The Lady Eagles will wait for their final placing in the best-of-three semifinals. BanKo and Creamline also secured spots in the Final Four while PetroGazz, Pocari Sweat-Air Force and Tacloban are still in the race for the last semis seat.
“Wala kaming preference kung sinuman makalaban namin. I told my players na we will play until the end no matter whar happens. Championship, for third place,” said Almadro. “Madagdagan ka ng ganoong games sa tough clubs sa Philippines, well, it's a privilege for us.”
“We skipped nga Collegiate for this para dito kami mabugbog. I hope na matuto pa rin kami. We will really learn from tough losses like this,” he added.
