Flat ang start namin, nabigyan ng buhay 'yung Ateneo noong start pa lang -- BanKo head coach Dong dela Cruz on loss
Nothing came BanKo’s way Saturday in Game 2 of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference semifinals series against Ateneo-Motolite.
A sluggish start, low energy and stinging errors troubled the Perlas Spikers as they yielded a game for the first time against the same team that they dominated in the eliminations and outlasted in the best-of-three series opener.
“Flat ang start namin, nabigyan ng buhay 'yung Ateneo noong start pa lang,” said Perlas Spikers coach Dong dela Cruz, whose squad suffered a 21-25, 20-25, 24-26, defeat that put the series into a decider. “'Yung service reception and blocking namin late na namin na-adjust.”
The Lady Eagles played aggressive the whole match and BanKo just couldn’t find any answer.
Only Dzi Gervacio finished in double figures for BanKo with 14 points while Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola combined for a quiet 14 markers.
Also, it didn’t help that the Perlas Spikers also gave away 25 points off their errors.
“Masyadong marami 'yung errors. Mahirap manalo kapag ganoon,” said Dela Cruz.
The Perlas Spikers took Game 1 in a thrilling five-set victory and were on the brink of setting up a breakthrough Finals appearance. It was BanKo’s third straight win over the Lady Eagles in the season-ending conference.
But Ateneo-Motolite spoiled their day and forced a winner-take-all Sunday.
“Siguro, masyadong relaxed 'yung team. Sabi ko sa kanila na hindi 'yan pupunta dito na ibibigay lang 'yung laro, talagang lalaban. Siguro, wake-up call sa amin 'to,” said Dela Cruz.
BanKo gave Ateneo-Motolite a scare in the third set after tying the count at 24 following two saved match points but a setting error by Fhen Emnas destroyed the Perlas Spikers’ chances of a comeback.
“May chance kami noong third set, okay sana kung nakuha namin 'yun. Naging problema lang 'yung error,” said Dela Cruz.
The mentor commended Ateneo-Motolite’s superb game but vowed that BanKo will be a different team in the decider.
“Talagang pinaghandaan din ng Ateneo, bigay ko talaga sa kanila,” he said. “'Yun na nga. Medyo 'di sanay 'yung mga players namin sa back-to-back na laro. Siguro, ibang usapan na bukas. Lalaban na lalaban kami bukas.”
