PVL: Lady Eagles arrange Finals showdown vs. Cool Smashers
Ateneo-Motolite forged a best-of-three PVL Season 2 Open Conference championship showdown against Creamline after disposing the veteran-laden BanKo.

Ateneo-Motolite clawed its way back from two sets down to complete a Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference semifinals series upset over veteran-laden BanKo, 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 21-19, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles recovered from a 0-1 series deficit to arrange a Finals showdown against title-favorite Creamline.

“Hindi na namin in-expect ang finals dito sa V-League, pro ‘to eh and we’re just a collegiate team so we didn’t expect this but my players wanted this,” said Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro.

Kat Tolentino hammered 17 kills in her 20-point outing while Ponggay Gaston delivered all but one of her 15 markers off attacks for Ateneo-Motolite. Maddie Madayag got 14 points highlighted by seven kill blocks while Bea De Leon posted 13 points for the Lady Eagles, who wreaked havoc at the net with 18 kill blocks.    

Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series is on Wednesday on the same venue.

BanKo took the series opener in a hard-fought 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 15-6, decision before the Lady Eagles equalized with a dominating 25-21, 25-20, 26-24, win in Game 2 Saturday.

The Lady Eagles squandered an 11-6 lead in the fifth set and allowed BanKo spark an 8-0 run to take the match point , 14-11. Ateneo-Motolite fought back to save three match points before Dzi Gervacio brought BanKo back on top, 15-14.

Tolentino saved a match point for Ateneo-Motolite before Madayag's kill block on Sue Roces put the Lady Eagles at match point advantage. Kathy Bersola's dropball and service ace pushed BanKo back at match point before Madayag knotted it once again.

Sasa Devanadera scored for the Perlas Spikers in the next play before Tolentino tied it again at 18. A net touch on BanKo setter Jem Ferrer put Ateneo-Motolite back on top, 19-18, before Nicole Tiamzon forced another deuce.

Perlas Spikers setter Fhen Emnas committed a costly setting miscue that set up Gaston's match-clinching hit.         

Ateneo-Motolite got into trouble in the fourth set when BanKo saved a set point and took a 25-24 advantage. A costly service error by Bersola gave the Lady Eagles a chance to fight back. Madayag put Ateneo-Motolite back in the lead with a service ace before Nicole Tiamzon committed an attack error that forced a deciding frame.        

BanKo outspiked the Lady Eagles, 79-60, but committed an atrocious  amount of errors, 31,  while letting Ateneo-Motolite land eight aces.

Nicole Tiamzon had 28 points, 25 from attacks, in a lost cause for the Perlas Spikers, whoi will take on PetroGazz in the best-of-three battle for third.

Gervacio scored 18 while Sue Roces and Bersola finished with 17 and 16 markers, respectively, for BanKo, which for the fourth straight conference fell short of a Finals stint. Joy Dacoron posted 11 points.
