Itís adminís decision. Of course ayaw naman nating salungatin Ďyan kasi UAAP na next week -- Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro
Ateneo de Manila University head coach Oliver Almadro apologized and asked for fans’ understanding as the Lady Eagles sat out the Premier Volleyball League All-Star Game Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Six Ateneo players were included in the roster of the teams led by Creamline’s Alyssa Valdez and Myla Pablo of Motolite with stars Deanna Wong, Kat Tolentino, Bea De Leon, rookie Vannie Gandler and libero Dani Ravena attending the meet and greet part of the event but didn’t suit up for the match as advised by the school. Maddie Madayag skipped the All-Star Game entirely to focus on her thesis.
Pablo's Team Red beat Valdez's Team Blue, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20.
“It’s admin’s decision. Of course ayaw naman nating salungatin ‘yan kasi UAAP na next week,” explained Almadro, who handled the Pablo-led Red Team with Tolentino, Gandler and De Leon.
“We will not say naman na petiks lang ang All-Stars, no eh. Of course, this is PVL All-Star kailangan quality,” added Almadro, who is also preparing his team for the coming UAAP Season 81 starting February 16. “Mahirap naman sabihin na, ‘Sige laro kayo tapos konti lang ibigay ninyo.’ Hindi naman natin ibinibigay sa players yun to give konti. They really have to show their best.”
“But of course, nandoon na rin ang safety,” he continued. “But sinabi naman namin na they will be part of this All-Star meet-and-greet, with the parlor games and everything. We are really supporting the cause of the ABS-CBN and the PVL All-Star kung para saan talaga ito. It just so happen na next week UAAP na. If this happened December, ibang usapan. That’s why we’re very sorry.”
Madayag, Ravena and Wong were supposed to play alongside Valdez in the All-Star Game, which aim to raise funds for the benefit of Hero Foundation.
“I know naman the PVL will understand. The other players din really wanted to support this cause kaya nandito sila,” said Almadro.
Isa Molde of University of the Philippines also skipped the event.
