PVL: Uunahan na namin ang mga kalaban namin -- Mercado
Six teams lang this conference so magiging mabilis ang conference na ‘to. Kaya talagang ang lahat ng games bakbakan talaga -- PetroGazz skipper Stephanie Mercado

With just six teams battling it out for honor and glory in a compact tournament schedule, PetroGazz looks to play with high intensity and consistency each game in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference.

The Angels aim for a podium finish this time after their debut last year so there’s no time for them to relax. Each game will be treated as a must-win match.

“Six teams lang this conference so magiging mabilis ang conference na ‘to. Kaya talagang ang lahat ng games bakbakan talaga,” said team captain Stephanie Mercado. “Hindi pwedeng mag-relax.”

“Kailangan ang mga games na ‘to laban kung laban, hindi pwedeng magpakiramdaman, uunahan na namin ang mga kalaban namin,” added Mercado.

The Angels will parade an intact core and added two more scorers in middle Jeanette Panaga and Jovie Prado. PetroGazz also tapped the services of American Janisa Johnson, who is familiar with the brand of play in the league, and Cuban national team member Wilma Salas.

PetroGazz finished fifth last year in the import-laden tournament before landing at fourth spot in the Open Conference.

“Since second year namin ito siguro ang pinaka-advantage namin dito ay individually experienced ang mga players namin but yung team nandoon pa kami sa process na pinapalalim ang chemistry with the imports,” said head coach Arnold Laniog, who took over the spot of now team consultant Jerry Yee.

The Angels prepared early for the season, working on their build-up since January, as PetroGazz has no collegiate player in its lineup.

“Maaga kami nag-start mag-training but I think the advantage is since last year magkakakilala na kami,” said Mercado. “Alam na namin ang mga drills na ginagawa namin, ang mga strengths and weaknesses namin as a team. Yung weaknesses, yun yung inaayos namin o ini-improve during the trainings para hindi na siya bumalik sa games.”

Returning for the Angels are local stars Cherry Nunag, Jessey de Leon, setters Djanel Cheng and Chie Saet, Cai Baloaloa, Alyssa Layug, Jonah Sabete, Rica Enclona and last year’s Best Libero Cienne Cruz.

PetroGazz will make its debut on Sunday against Creamline.
