PacificTown Army beat BaliPure in its Premier Volleyball League debut on Sunday.
Newcomer PacificTown Army recovered from a third set meltdown and a scare in the fourth to turn back BaliPure, 25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, in its debut in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
American import Jenelle Jordan and Lena Lymareva-Flink led the Lady Troopers with 15 points each.
Lymareva-Flink, who played for PetroGazz last year, hammered 12 spikes with three aces while debuting Jordan got 10 kills, three kill blocks and a pair aces for PacificTown.
The Lady Troopers got quite a scare in the fourth set as the Water Defenders, who are making their return to the league after skipping the season-ending Open Conference last year, saved three match points to breathe down the neck of PacificTown Army, 24-23, off a Grazielle Bombita hit.
But Menchie Tubiera overcooked her serve as the Lady Troopers breathed a sigh of relief.
“First two sets kotroladong-kontrolado namin but ‘yung third set ‘yung breaks of the game medyo mabigat para sa amin. Once na mag-extend ang set yun yung ano eh, Ging (Balse-Pabayo) was ano na, nauubos na in the fourth set,” said Lady Troopers mentor Kungfu Reyes. “Kailangan na naming imaxi-mize talaga na kung kaya naming tapusin ng hangang third set tatapusin na namin.”
Royse Tubino added nine markers while Jovelyn Gonzaga, who is making her return to volleyball action after recovering from a knee injury she sustained in 2017, finished with eight for PacificTown Army, which got 40 markers off BaliPure’s errors.
The Water Defenders played with just one import after Danijela Dzakovic of Montenegro was unavailable due to some clearance issues.
BaliPure came back from a 21-23 deficit in the third set with a three-point swing to take the set point advantage after a Tubino attack error. Jordan tied the frame with a quick attack but the import gave the set point advantage to the Water Defenders after putting too much power on her serve.
Gonzaga yielded the frame after sending her crosscourt attack wide.
Slovakian Alexandra Vajdova fired 20 points off 18 spikes, a kill block and an ace with 11 excellent receptions for BaliPure. Grazielle Bombita finished with 18 markers off 14 kills and four aces for the Water Defenders.
