PVL: Cool Smashers score bounce back win
Creamline barged into the win column after a quick work of PacificTown Army.

Defending champion Creamline bounced back mightily from an opening day loss by sweeping PacificTown Army, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18, on Wednesday despite playing sans head coach Huanning Li in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Team captain Alyssa Valdez, who sprained her left ankle in the Cool Smashers’ straight sets loss to PetroGazz, returned to action and helped both inside the court and in calling out plays at the sidelines alongside assistant coach Ed Ortega after the management parted ways with Li after just one game.

Thai import Kuttika Kaewpin and Venezuelan reinforcement Aleoscar Blanco provided the needed firepower after a quiet first game while Michele Gumabao scored 13 points off nine spikes, two aces and two kill blocks for Creamline.

"'Yung rotation namin medyo inayos namin and I think also the training mismo na ginagawa namin kasi inaral din namin ‘yung Army, kung paano sila gumalaw, yung mga tendencies nila. Pinag-usapan din namin ng coaching staff kung ano ang best na pantapat sa system ng Army," said Ortega, who will still call the shots on Sunday against BanKo pending Li's replacement.

Sources said that former mentor Tai Bundit of Thailand, who steered the Cool Smashers to the Reinforced and Open Conference crowns last year, will make a return stint in the Cool Smashers' bench.

Valdez and Blanco scored 12 points each while Kaewpin and Risa Sato got nine markers each for the Cool Smashers, who hammered 41 points off attacks. Kaewpin added 10 digs and five excellent receptions while Jia Morado tallied 27 excellent sets.

Creamline kept their distance agianst the veteran-laden Lady Troopers the whole game and even built a 17-8 lead in thne third frame before PacificTown Army made a last ditch fighback. The Lady Troopers cut down their deficit to 18-14 but  the Cool Smashers were quick to extinguish Army's counterattack.

The Lady Troopers slipped to 1-1 slate.

American Jenelle Jordan was the only PacificTown Army in double figures with 10 points while Ukrainian Lena Lymareva-Flink finished with nine. Jovelyn Gonzaga had seven markers while Nene Bautista and Royse Tubino combined for 11 points in a lost cause.
