PVL: Bright shines as Perlas Spikers snatch first win
BanKo rebounded from an opening day loss with a four-set victory over winless BaliPure.

Kia Bright bounced back from a disappointing opening game for BanKo as the American import powered the Perlas Spikers to a 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, victory over BaliPure on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Bright, who was limited to only six points in a straight sets loss to league-leading PetroGazz on Wednesday, fired 16 points as BanKo barged in the win column for a 1-1 win-loss record after the first of their back-to-back weekend schedule.

“It’s an improvement. Although I still think we’re still working to jell completely as a team but definitely much better than last game,” said Bright, who had 12 spikes, four kill blocks and seven digs. “I’m grateful for that and hopefully we could just continue to improve from here.”

The Perlas Spikers punished the attackers of BaliPure with 15 kill blocks and hammered 49 attacks.

Kathy Bersola scored 15 points including six kill blocks while Nicole Tiamzon and Turkish reinforcement Yasemin Yildirim finished with 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for BanKo.

The Perlas Spikers will take on defending champion Creamline on Sunday.

“Much better than last game. Tingin ko naman nagi-improve kami one set a at a time. Yung feeling kasi ng previous game parang wala pa sa atmosphere na naglalaro,” said Tiamzon. “Thankful na rin kami na nakapag-adjust kami this game step by step. Marami pa kaming kailangang i-clear na errors namin, i-clear na problems. Hopefully bukas maayos na namin.”

BanKo face a tough resistance from the Water Defenders in the first two sets with the Perlas Spikers barely escaping the opening frame. BanKo saw its 14-7 lead in the second set evaporate and allowed BaliPure to steal the set after coming back from a 22-23 deficit with Water Defenders import Alexandra Vajdova tying the set at 23, followed by a Grazielle Bombita ace before the Slovakian import’s frame-winning off the block hit.

BanKo was quick to regroup as the Perlas Spikers opened comfortable cushions in the last two frames to snatch the win.

Montenegrin reinforcement Danijela Dzakovic, who skipped BaliPure’s first game due to technicalities on her international transfer certificate, debuted with 23 points while Bombita and Vajdova had 14 markers each for the 0-2 Water Defenders, who gave away 30 errors.
