PetroGazz remains unscathed after sweeping BaliPure.
Unbeaten PetroGazz extended its winning streak to four straight after making quick work of listless BaliPure, 25-19, 25-12, 25-15, on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying Centre in San Juan.
The Angels, who are yet to lose a set, moved a win away from completing a first round sweep behind American import Janisa Johnson and Wilma Salas of Cuba.
Salas hammered all of her 12 points off attacks, including two facials in the opening set, and added nine excellent receptions. Johnson fired 12 points off 10 spikes and two kill blocks with 11 digs for the Angels, who needed only 72 minutes to dismantle the Water Defenders.
PetroGazz also got significant help from the locals with Jeanette Panaga scoring 11 markers while Jonah Sabete got eight points off the bench.
Although Angels head coach Arnol Laniog liked their position in the race for a Final Four spot, he stressed the need to guard against complacency.
“The more na nananalo, the more na rin hindi dapat magiging complacent kasi yung mga kalaban lalong magpeprepare yan lalo sa second round,” Laniog said. “Hopefully, may maihanda kaming gameplan going to the second round kasi siyempre yung kalaban binabasa kami.”
Sabete, who saw limited playing time in the Angels’ first three games, broke the second set open, 22-10, off a crosscourt kill.
With BaliPure’s confidence down, the Angels clinically dismantled the error-plagued Water Defenders to build their momentum heading to their end of first round match against PacificTown Army on Saturday.
No BaliPure player finished in double figures with Alexandra Vajdova of Slovakia and Montenegrin Danijela Dzakovic scoring eight and seven, respectively, for the 0-3 Water Defenders.
