PetroGazz sweeps the first round of eliminations without dropping a set.
Cuban import Wilma Salas displayed another scoring clinic as PetroGazz completed a sweep of the first round with a 25-12, 29-27, 25-15, demolition of PacificTown Army on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The streaking Angels made a clean sweep of the round, winning all of their five games without dropping a set, to keep a tight grip of the lead.
Salas and American import Janisa Johnson led the way on offense for PetroGazz with 27 and 22 points, respectively.
"I feel very good and happy because now we have a good opportunity for the next round. I think this is one step for the playoff [semis]," said Salas, who had 19 spikes, six aces and two kill blocks with seven digs.
Johnson nailed 17 attacks, three kill blocks and two aces laced with 10 excellent receptions for the Angels, who outgunned PacificTown Army, 47-23, and dominated at the net with 12 kill blocks compared to the Lady Troopers' three.
The 6-foot-2 Salas played clutch in the second frame when PetroGazz made an amazing rally from 17-22 deficit before taking the extended set.
The Angels clawed their way back from the five points down with Jeanette Panaga tying the frame at 23.
Ukrainian import Lena Lymareva-Flink put the Lady Troopers at set point before Salas saved a set point in the next play. PacificTown Army reclaimed the lead, Salas answered with an off the block kill before overcooking her service.
Johnson tied it at 26. American Jenelle Jordan gave the Lady Troopers another taste of set point advantage but Cai Baloaloa knotted the set at 27 off a kill block.
Johnson hammered a crosscourt hit for the Angels' first taste of set point advantage before Lymareva-Flink surrendered the frame with her attack sailing long.
It was all PetroGazz in the third set, building an early gap before cruising to another impressive win.
The Angels marched into the game with all guns blazing as they buried PacificTown Army, 18-4, in the opening set.
The Lady Troopers slid to 2-2 win-loss slate tied with BanKo.
Jordan and Lymareva-Flink were the only PacificTown Army players in double digits with 11 points each.
