PacificTown Army outlasted BanKo in a thrilling five-set escape to end the first round on a high note.
PacificTown Army rediscovered its winning ways after a hard-fought 25-22, 23-25, 27-29, 25-20, 15-7, victory on Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Troopers turned to American import Jenelle Jordan and a gem of a find off the bench in local Jem Gutierrez to finish the first round on a winning note for a 3-2 win-loss record.
“We finished on a high note sa end of first round at 3-2. Happy kami na nasa gitna kami ng standings,” said head coach Kungfu Reyes.
Young setter Alina Bicar glued PacificTown Army together in the season’s first five-setter, tallying 26 excellent sets with 10 points.
Jordan finished with 23 points with 21 coming off attacks while Ukrainian Lena Lymareva-Flink had 19 markers with 13 digs and 14 excellent receptions for the Lady Troopers.
Royse Tubino posted 16 points in four sets of action while Angela Nunag had 30 digs and 18 excellent receptions for PacificTown Army.
The Lady Troopers used the momentum they built in the fourth set to race to an 8-1 cushion in the deciding frame.
Nicole Tiamzon tried to breathe new life to BanKo, scoring three of the squad’s 4-0 rally to cut the Perlas Spikers’ deficit to 11-7. But an attack error by Tiamzon gave PacficiTown Army an opening to finish off BanKo with Gutierrez hitting a kill before veteran Nene Bautista’s back-to-back aces.
Gutierrez made the most of her time inside the court when she was fielded in for the first time midway in the crucial fourth set. Coming off the bench, the seldom-used hitter scored four of the last nine points of the Lady Troopers in the frame including the set point kill in a rally that broke a 16-16 deadlock to a 24-18 lead.
The Perlas Spikers saved two set points before Bautista forced the deciding set on an off the block hit.
BanKo, which threw away 27 points off errors, fell to 2-3 slate.
American Kia Bright fired 20 point highlighted by 18 attacks and added 19 digs and 20 receives in a losing cause for the Perlas Spikers. Tiamzon had 17 points while Turkish import Yasemin Yildirim and Kathy Bersola scored 10 markers each for BanKo.
