PetroGazz preserved its perfect record and secured at least a Final Four playoff.
Unbeaten PetroGazz picked up from where it left off in the first round as the Angels secured at least a playoff for a Final Four seat after taking down BanKo, 25-23, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20, on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Angels extended their winning streak to six straight – albeit dropping a set for the first time in the import-laden conference – to put a foot inside the semifinals. PetroGazz can formally clinch a Final Four slot with another victory.
Imports Wilma Salas of Cuba and American Janisa Johnson carried the Angels to an elims sweep the Perlas Spikers, who showed grit despite playing with an all-Filipino lineup for most of the match with reinforcements American Kia Bright and Yasimin Yildirim logging in limited minutes.
Salas finished with a personal league-best 37 points built on 35 attacks and two kill blocks while adding 13 excellent receptions for the Angels. Johnson added 24 markers with all but one coming off spikes laced with 16 digs and 13 excellent receptions for PetroGazz, which punished the Perlas Spikers with 70 attack points with nine kill blocks.
“Again one game at a time lang rin. Ang focus naman namin talaga every game ay mag-improve. But coming to this game, ayun nagiging complacent na rin kung minsan,” said Angels coach Arnold Laniog. “Better din na natalo kami ng set kanina para ma-realize ng mga players na hindi basta-basta [ang mga games] dahil kung every time na mag-relax ka dyan pwede kang masilat ng kung sino-sino.”
Jeanette Panaga had nine markers while Cherry Nunag and Cai Baloaloa combined for 10 points for Angels.
PetroGazz broke free from a 13-13 deadlock in the fourth frame with a scoring blitz for a 24-17 lead capped by Johnson's back-to-back hits. The Perlas Spikers save three match points but Dzi Gervacio committed an attack error as BanKo yielded the match.
BanKo pulled a surprise in the third set as they stunned the Angels early on to build a 15-5 cushion. PetroGazz rallied for a final push in the frame as the Angels saved a set point, 24-22, off a Salas attack but setter Djanel Cheng served short in the next play to surrender the frame.
The Perlas Spikers caught PetroGazz off-guard in the opening frame with veterans Nicole Tiamzon, Dzi Gervacio and Sue Roces leading the way to take a 22-17 lead only to see the Angels close it out with an 8-1 blitz.
PetroGazz controlled the second frame to cruise to a 2-0 match lead.
The Perlas Spikers suffered their second straight loss for a 2-4 win-loss slate.
Tiamzon had 20 points off 16 spikes, three aces and a kill block with 17 digs while Gervacio and Kathy Bersola finished with 13 and nine points, respectively, for BanKo. Yildirim had three points while Bright played for only two sets with only one point under her name for the Perlas Spikers.
