BanKo swept BaliPure to secure at least a playoff for a semifinals spot.
BanKo secured at least a playoff for a Final Four berth after drubbing listless BaliPure, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21, on Wednesday in the penultimate playdate of the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference elimination round at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola played clutch in the closing stretch of the tight third set to deliver the Perlas Spikers’ second straight win for a 4-5 win-loss record tied with PacificTown Army.
The duo scored BanKo’s last eight points in the third frame that broke a 17-17 deadlock to send the Water Defenders reeling to their ninth loss in as many games.
Tiamzon finished with 19 points including the game-clinching service ace while Thai import Sutadta Chuewulim and Bersola scored 12 and eight markers, respectively, for the Perlas Spikers. Chuewulim added 10 digs and 10 receptions while Turkish reinforcement Yasemin Yildirim posted nine points for BanKo, which will close its elims campaign on Saturday against the Lady Troopers where the no. 3 seat in the Final Four is at stake.
“We’re hungry to win talaga and makapasok ng semis. Kasi nu’ng first round parang 50-50 talaga although (hanggang ngayon) hindi pa talaga sure [sa semis] but we need to double time,” said Tiamzon.
In case, BanKo loses to PacificTown Army and Motolite hurdles PetroGazz for a tie at 4-6, there will be a playoff for the no. 4 seat on Sunday.
“We can’t afford na maging complacent ang hirap umasa sa panalo or talo ng ibang kalaban, so kahit ano man yung bigay sa amin kailangan namin paghirapan talaga whether it’s third or fourth place,” said Tiamzon, who also played clutch in the Perlas Spikers’ five-set escape over Motolite.
With the third set tied at 17, Tiamzon scored off an attack followed by Bersola's quick kill before another Tiamzon hit. The Perlas Spikers built a 22-18 gap before the Water Defenders cut it to 21-22.
Tiamzon stopped the bleeding with an off the block hit before Bersola scored on a kill block on Montenegrin Danijela Dzakovic. Tiamzon sealed the win with an ace.
Slovenian Alexandra Vajdova registered 13 points with 11 coming off kills while Dzakovic got 12 for the Water Defenders, who will close the elims on Saturday against semis-bound defending champion Creamline.
