PetroGazz snatched the top seeding in the Final Four.
PetroGazz locked the top seeding in the Final Four after showing Motolite the exit door in the race to the Final Four in a 25-19, 25-15, 25-15, victory to close the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference elimination round Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in Sa Juan.
The Angels forged a best-of-three showdown with No. 4 seed BanKo in the semifinals, which will begin on Wednesday.
American Janisa Johnson scored 15 points off 10 attacks and 10 kill blocks and added eight digs and six excellent receptions while Cuban Wilma Salas posted 14 markers with all but one coming off spikes for PetroGazz, which closed the elims with a 9-1 win-loss record tied with defending champion Creamline.
The Angels took the no. 1 seed by virtue of higher tiebreak. The Cool Smashers will face PacificTown Army in the other Final Four pairing.
Even with the seat in the semis already secured, PetroGazz played with a mindset of building momentum heading into the all-important Final Four series.
“Sila (Motolite) ang naghahabol, sila ang may chance na maka-playoff ang BanKo so tayo panindigan natin na tayo ang nasa taas na nasa no. 1 spot going to the semifinals,” said Angels coach Arnold Laniog. “Better na galing kami sa panalo.”
Cherry Nunag, who suffered cramps in the second set and sat out the third frame, and Paneng Mercado combined for 10 markers for PetroGazz, who played solid net defense with 11 kill blocks.
Motolite came up short of forcing a playoff for the last semis berth with its seventh loss in 10 games.
Trinidadian Channon Thompson was the only Motolite player in double figures with 17 points – all from attacks – while compatriot Krystle Esdelle made nine markers and seven digs.
