I’m embracing the situation. ‘Yun na lang ang ginagawa ko ngayon -- Jovelyn Gonzaga on playing in two leagues
Jovelyn Gonzaga is truly living up to her ‘Bionic Ilongga’ moniker.
Just hours after arriving in Manila from an out-of-town game with Cignal in a different club league, Gonzaga suited up for PacificTown Army for Game 1 of the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference best-of-three semifinals against defending champion Creamline on Wednesday.
The Lady Troopers may have bowed down to the Cool Smashers, 24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, but Gonzaga’s dedication to fulfill her commitment with the PVL and the Philippine Superliga showed her professionalism.
“‘Yun na ‘yun eh, parang I don’t have a choice. ‘Pag sinasabihan nila ako na, ‘nakakapagod naman ang ginagawa mo’ if I only have a choice, pipiliin ko na magpahinga but I don’t have a choice,” said Gonzaga.
The lefty Ilongga, who’s back in competitive volleyball action after almost two years of recovery from a knee injury and military service, played for the HD Spikers in a lost cause against F2 Logistics in the PSL All-Filipino Conference game Tuesday night in Cadiz City in Negros Occidental.
She flew back to the Big City Wednesday morning for the PVL semis at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Even after a tiring trip, Gonzaga, who is slowly regaining her old, dangerous form, played a decent game for the Lady Troopers with 12 digs, 11 excellent receptions and four points in four sets of play.
“I’m embracing the situation. ‘Yun na lang ang ginagawa ko ngayon,” said Gonzaga, who will fly back to Negros on Thursday morning for Cignal’s match against Generika-Ayala in Silay City.
The former indoor and beach volleyball national team player will return to Manila on Friday morning. Game 2 of the semis is on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
But even with her busy schedule, juggling her stints in two leagues, Gonzaga keeps in mind her health and safety.
“Ang goal ko kasi I have to enjoy one game at a time. Every day I have to enjoy,” she said. “Ayoko kasing pressuring ang sarili ko.”
“The more ko na pe-pressurin ang sarili ko, the more na magawa ko ang mga bagay beyond may limit, baka ibuwis buhay ko na naman. This time I’m at the point na kung ano lang ang kaya ko yun muna ang ipapakita ko,” Gonzaga added. “I have to overcome each day. Kailangan ko lang ma-survive ang araw. Kailangan ko lang mai-survive ko yung laro ko na I’m safe. Yun na muna ang pina-prioritize ko ngayon.”
