PVL: Offense vs. defense in Angels-Perlas Spikers clash

League-leading attacker Cuban Wilma Salas of PetroGazz and top blocker Kathy Bersola of Banko try to lead their respective teams closer to a Finals seat on Wednesday.
It will be a battle between the best attacking team and the strongest blocking squad when top seed PetroGazz and BanKo square off in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference best-of-three semifinals opener on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Game time is at 5:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream.
PetroGazz finished the two-round eliminations with a 9-1 win-loss record tied with defending champion Creamline. The Angels took the no. 1 berth via better tiebreak.
PetroGazz boasts of a 41.19% success rate in attacks and is the best receiving team after the elims with a 43.13% efficiency.
The Angels are bannered by the top two precision hitters in Cuban Wilma Salas and American Janisa Johnson.
Salas, who is averaging 21.2 points per game, has a 47% success rate in spikes while Johnson, who norms with 18.3 points per outing, has a 46.22% attacking efficiency as well as a 48.26% efficiency in receives.
PetroGazz defeated BanKo in the elims twice.
With towering Kathy Bersola and Turkish import Yasemin Yildirim at the helm, the Perlas Spikers eye to spoil the projected PetroGazz-Creamline Finals showdown with their vaunted net defense.
Bersola and Yildirim top the blocking department with 0.78 and 0.68 kill blocks per set, respectively.
As a team, BanKo is averaging 2.46 kill blocks per set.
Backing the duo are Thai Sutadta Cheuwulim, clutch-playing Nicole Tiamzon, Sue Roces, Dzi Gevacio and setter Jem Ferrer.
