Ana Gopico finally got a crack at competitive volleyball after almost two years out.
The spiker may have not contributed in points, but the minutes she logged in as a BanKo rookie gave the former Ateneo de Manila University player a big boost of confidence on her road back to her old form.
“Pinasok ako nung second set. Kabado pa ako kasi one year din akong di nakatapak ng arena eh,” said Gopico, who came in as a reliever in the Perlas Spikers’ 25-20, 11-25, 25-21, 25-18, win over PetroGazz on Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Gopico, who made her return after being sidelined with a knee injury and played in an indoor volleyball tournament for the first time since UAAP Season 79 in 2017, subbed in for Kathy Bersola in the second frame.
“Intense pa agad ang laban dahil humahabol pa kami kanina,” said Gopico, who suffered three ACL injuries during the course of her collegiate career. “Kahit ‘di ako naka-score, as much as possible, I tried to uplift my teammates na makakabawi tayo agad.”
Gopico was obviously adjusting to the system of head coach Apichat Kongsawat. Gopico tried to score on a joust to no avail and committed an error when her timing on an off-speed was off.
“Medyo wala akong contribution kanina,” she said.
Gopico admitted the she still has tons of things to work on.
“Siguro, almost halfway siguro. Marami pa akong hahabulin, for sure,” she said.
Gopico and the rest of the Perlas Spikers will take on Philippine Air Force next on Wednesday.
