BanKo recovered from a second set meltdown and sent PetroGazz crashing back to earth, 25-20, 11-25, 25-21, 25-18, on Sunday to begin its Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference quest on a high note at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Dzi Gervacio and skipper Nicole Tiamzon led the way for the Perlas Spikers’ sweet revenge over their Reinforced Conference semifinals tormentors to join reigning champion Creamline in the opening day winners’ list.
Gervacio hammered 12 attacks including the game-clinching running hit to end her first game with 14 points laced with 17 digs for an all-around performance for BanKo, which finished third in the tournament last year.
Tiamzon added 12 markers while Suzanne Roces and Kathy Bersola got nine points each for the Perlas Spikers, who introduced newcomer Ana Gopico, Cherilyn Sindayen and libero Princess Balang.
“To be honest, ‘yung team medyo bago pa nagta-transition pa with the new teammates. Malaking bagay yun na nag-jell ang team. Di agad agad nakukuha yun pero good, positive vibes at malaking bagay sa amin yun sa kumpyansa ng team kahit na maraming bago,” said Tiamzon, the Reinforced Conference 1st Best Open Spiker.
The Perlas Spikers regrouped in the third frame and showed grit in the fourth set as they broke a 14-14 deadlock with an 11-4 blitz capped by Tiamzon’s back-to-back aces before Gervacio’s game-winner.
The import-laden tournament defending champions Angels failed to use the momentum of their title conquest a month ago, falling victim to the same team that they dominated in four meetings in the Reinforced Conference.
Jovielyn Prado paced the Angels with 13 points with all but one coming off spikes and added 13 digs and 11 excellent receptions.
Jeanette Panaga scored 10 markers while Cherry Nunag and Paneng Mercado got nine points apiece for PetroGazz.
