University of Sto. Tomas welcomed the return of EJ Laure with a dominating 25-18, 25-13, 25-21, win over Lyceum of the Philippines University on Sunday in Group B of the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigresses, who unfortunately lost wing spiker Ysa Jimenez to a left ankle injury before the start of the match, joined College of St. Benilde in the opening day winners’ list.
Head coach Kungfu Reyes got a chance to field all of his players on the banch as UST displayed balanced scoring led by rookie Imee Hernandez’s nine points. Freshman Janna Torres and Kecelyn Galdones scored eight and five markers, respectively, for the Espana-based squad.
“Para sa mga bata talaga itong liga namin. Nandoon naman yung potesyal pero talagang ide-develop pa namin through ganitong liga. Mahaba-haba pa naman ang preparation [for UAAP],” said Reyes. “Halos lahat naman ng team puro bata pero yun nga good experience para sa kanila.”
“Since first game OK naman ang laro kahit papaano,” he added.
Laure, the UAAP Season 77 Rookie of the year, finally made her long-awaited return since suffering a shoulder injury back in 2017. She scored two points coming off an ace and a kill to punctuate the Tigresses’ emphatic 73-minute win.
Mary Joy Onofre paced LPU with nine points while Ciemelle Wanta and Zonki Dahab finished with six markers each.
