Defending champion Creamline got its sweet payback after the Cool Smashers swept their first conference Finals tormentor PetroGazz, 25-19, 28-26, 25-20, on Sunday to remain unbeaten in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Alyssa Valdez starred in Creamline’s fifth straight conquest in as many games to solidify its hold of the solo top spot in a very challenging week that saw the Cool Smashers hurdle serious contenders BanKo and the Angels.
“I guess it wasn’t the best game we had din as a team,” said Valdez, who had 15 points off 13 spikes and two aces and added 14 digs and seven excellent receptions. "Kudos to PetroGazz because they’re having a block party. It was really hard to penetrate sa blocking nila.”
Michele Gumabao scored 13 points, Celine Domingo, who stepped up for injured Pau Soriano, had 11 while Jema Galanza posted 10 markers including the match-clinching kill block. Soriano sprained an ankle.
Creamline got quite a scare in the second set after PetroGazz reached set point, 24-23, before the Cool Smashers got a break after Chery Nunag committed a net touch.
Domingo served short in the next play before Risa Sato tied it for the Cool Smashers with a kill block. Nunag gave the lead back to PetroGazz, 26-25, on a quick attack but swiped the ball out in the next play.
Valdez scored on a tip off the Angels’ overreception before sealing the set win with a kill.
With momentum on their side, the Cool Smashers cruised in the third to complete the one-hour, 28-minute victory.
Jeanette Panaga was the only Angels player in double figures with 10 points. Nunag and Paneng Mercado registered eight and seven markers, respectively, for the 1-2 PetroGazz.
