PetroGazz dug deep into its bag of experience to outlast ChocoMucho, 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 20-25, 15-3, to stretch its winning romp to three on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Angels raced to a comfortable 8-0 lead in the fifth set to dictate the pace as the skidding Flying Titans crumbled. PetroGazz improved to a 4-2 win-loss record.
Five Angels finished in double figures with setter Djanel Cheng distributing the ball well for PetroGazz’s balance scoring. Jonah Sabete scored 15 markers with all but one coming off attacks including a left-handed soft hit down the line that put the Angels on top, 8-0 in the fifth frame that broke the back of ChocoMucho.
Cherry Nunag had 14 markers, Jovelyn Prado and Cai Baloaloa finished with 11 each while Jeanette Panaga wreaked havoc at the net with six kill blocks for 10 markers for the Angels.
After yielding the third and fourth sets, the Angels rediscovered the same intensity that pulled them through in the first two frames and banked on their veteran smarts and composure to douse cold water on the Flying Titans’ comeback attempt.
“Malaking bagay ang naging composure namin sa fifth set,” said PetroGazz coach Arnold Laniog. “Mahirap din kalaban [ang ChocoMucho] kasi malalaki rin talaga and they have legitimate percentage spiker na si [Kat] Tolentino.”
The Flying Titans scored only two attacks out of their three fifth set points with its last coming from Maddie Madayag with ChocoMucho already buried, 10-3. PetroGazz finished off the Flying Titans with five unanswered points to hand ChocoMucho its third straight defeat.
Tolentino had 24 points including 21 attacks while Madayag had 11 as ChocoMucho slid to a 2-4 card.
