Adamson University bucked a first set meltdown before stunning Ateneo de Manila University, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-21, to punch the first semifinals ticket in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Collegiate Conference Pool A on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Rookie setter Louie Romero displayed superb playmaking and leadership as the Lady Falcons recovered from a terrible start on their way to their fourth straight win in as many outings. Adamson handed the Lady Eagles, who played without top hitter Faith Nisperos who was resting from a viral infection, their first loss in four games.

“Parang blangko lahat nu'ng first set. So ginawa namin kinalma muna namin sila nung secon set before magsimula kasi wala na magagawa talo na e, ayaw na talaga gumalaw so sabi namin reset tayo ng second set, erase na natin yung first set. Let’s start fresh,” said Lady Falcons coach Lerma Giron. “So nag-respond naman ‘yung mga bata na-challenge sila.”

Romero orchestrated Adamson’s balance scoring as she dished out 28 excellent sets that helped Lady Falcons hammer down 43 attack points.

Trisha Genesis led the way with 19 points off 12 attacks, a kill block and six aces including the service winner that pushed the Lady Falcons at match point.

Lucille Almonte had 14 markers, 15 digs and 11 receptions while Rizza Cruz, Ceasa Pinar and Lorene Toring scored seven points each for Adamson, which feasted on Ateneo’s suspect service reception to land 12 aces.

The rookie-laden Lady Falcons showed grace under pressure in the fourth set as they came back from a 17-19 deficit to take a 21-20 lead from a Genesis kill.

Lady Eagles freshman Joan Narit tied the frame at 21 but Ateneo committed back-to-back attack errors from Ponggay Gaston and Erika Raagas. Genesis landed an ace in the next play before Almonte tapped the ball to an open hole on Ateneo’s defense to complete the win.

“Walang panalong hindi pinaghihirapan,” said Giron. “Kailangan kung gusto nilang manalo, they need to do extra extra effort beyond sa effort na ginagawa ng kalaban. So yun nag-respond din, nag-extra effort even though yung energy nakita natin bumababa na pero more on mental toughness and conditioning.”

Raagas finished with 16 points with all but one coming off attacks while Gaston and Vannie Gandler had 12 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Lady Eagles.
