PVL: I know na someone has to step up – Nisperos
I know na kailangan kong i-acknowledge and i-accept na that’s the role kahit na rookie ako -- Faith Nisperos

When Faith Nisperos joined the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles she already knew what kind of role she’ll be playing for the team.

And just when the Ateneo needed someone to carry the Lady Eagles past a gritty College of St. Benilde side, Nisperos did her part well.

The rookie blasted a personal-best 35 points to lead the Lady Eagles to 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11, win over the Lady Blazers in Game 1 of the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Collegiate Conference best-of-three battle for third Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

“When I first came to Ateneo I know I have a role to play and that’s the role na magiging one of the go-to players ako,” said the National University-Nazareth school recruit.

Nisperos embraced her role right from the time she decided to bring her talents to Loyola.

“Di ko na parang lolokohin ang sarili ko na, hindi, I know na kailangan kong i-acknowledge and i-accept na that’s the role kahit na rookie ako,” she added. “I know na that’s the role na in-expect ng coaches ko and ng team ko na gawin ko.”

Nisperos had 29 attacks, four aces and a pair of kill blocks while adding 17 digs to highlight her well-rounded performance in a match that saw some of her teammates struggle.

“What really boosts me to do such a performance is I know that at that time na hindi masyado nakaka-perform yung teammates ko,” said Nisperos. “I know na someone has to step up and yun ang motivation ko, for the team. I need to play the role na kung kailangang pumuntos, pupuntos. Kung kailangang dumepensa, dumepensa.”

Nisperos highlighted her heroic outing in the fifth set as she scored for of the team’s first six points. CSB was able to comeback from six points down to threaten the Lady Eagles, but Nisperos was there to quash the Lady Blazers' run with back-to-back hits that sparked Ateneo’s closing run and pushed the squad a step closer to a podium finish.

Although Nisperos is known to be a high-scoring hitter in high school where she won a Most Valuable Player award and four titles, the freshman was surprised when saw stats sheet.

“I was surprised kanina na, ‘What 35?!’ Di ko in-expect na ganoon karami ang ma-contribute ko sa team,” said Nisperos, who was as shocked with her number of digs.

Her performance in Game 1, said Nisperos was satisfactory. But there’s more to come.

“Siyempre! Always the direction that I want to go is up,” she said.
