Defending champion Creamline completed a sweep of the elimination round.
Jema Galanza and Michele Gumabao displayed their all-around game as defending champion Creamline completed a record 16-game sweep of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference after turning back Motolite, 25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16, at the close of the elimination round Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Galanza fired 23 points off 20 attacks and three aces and added 21 excellent receptions while Gumabao dropped 14 markers and had 23 digs for the no. 1 seed Cool Smashers, who will again take on Motolite in the best-of-three Final Four.
Creamline, who played without national team members Alyssa Valdez and setter Jia Morado, looked to be on its way into another sweep but Myla Pablo exploded in the third set as Motolite refused to go down without a fight.
But the Cool Smashers made sure that Motolite won’t get a chance to push the game into a deciding set.
“Siyempre happy medyo nakulangan lang ngayong game kasi ang daming errors,” said Galanza. “But okay naman din kasi hindi nagbago yung confidence namin talagang yung happiness namin sa loob ng court tuloy tuloy pa rin naman.”
The two teams will meet again Saturday with Valdez and Morado back after cutting their Japan training with the national team short in time for the semis.
Motolite actually finished tied for third at 10-6 with BanKo-Perlas but the latter took the No. 3 spot with a better tiebreak score. BanKo lost to Motolite in five in the first round but swept the latter in their second round faceoff.
BanKo-Perlas and No. 2 PetroGazz will dispute the other finals berth.
Pablo had 14 points to pace Motolite while Tots Carlos and Aie Gannaban had 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
