PacificTown Army star Jovelyn Gonzaga is living up to her moniker as the ‘Bionic Ilongga’.
Less than 24 hours after a grueling five-set match in a different tournament, Gonzaga’s endurance and heart went to the test once again, this time with the Lady Troopers coming back from two sets down including a record-setting opening frame to down ChocoMucho on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference.
Gonzaga led PacificTown Army to a 39-41, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12, win to remain unscathed in two outings.
The lefty Guimaras native displayed an all-around game and played her heart out despite seeing action in a draining five-set decider with Cignal in the 2019 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference semifinals against Petron.
“Pagod na pagod pero wala, high morale ako kasi puro panalo,” said Gonzaga, who just came back from a two-year hiatus following a knee injury. “Yun na lang ang attitude ko. High morale talaga ako, wala akong iniisip na iba.”
Gonzaga displayed her vintage form as she finished with 24 points with all but one coming off attacks. The 27-year old former national team standout also contributed well on floor defense with 26 digs and 16 excellent receptions in the two-hour, 46-minute duel.
Army allowed the opposite spiker to play in both leagues and as a way of giving back, Gonzaga vowed to give her 100% effort every game for the Lady Troopers.
“Ang lagi ko ngang sinasabi gusto kong mag-give back sa coaches na nag-iintindi sa akin,” said Gonzaga, who in the Reinforced Conference helped PacificTown Army capture the bronze in the squad’s first stint in the league.
“Kasi siya (coach Kungfu Reyes) grabe yung pag-intindi niya sa akin, hindi niya ako binubugbog sa training,” said Gonzaga. “Ito naman yung way ko paano ako makabalik ng tiwala.”
Gonzaga will rest tonight, knowing that she accomplished her task for the day for the Lady Troopers.
On Thursday, she’ll be back in action for her other club team.
