Mom-to-be Paneng Mercado-de Koenigswarter is not closing her door on returning to volleyball action soon.
But in the meantime the PetroGazz star, who is approaching her third trimester, wants to put her full attention on the challenge of motherhood.
Speaking on Migs Bustos’ Off The Record podcast, the former De La Salle University standout shared that she did consider hanging her jersey after tying the knot with long-time boyfriend, David, last January and finding out that she’s pregnant.
“Pumasok siya sa isip ko na stop na ako mag-volleyball, mag-retire na ako. I’ve been playing since 2005. I’ve been playing volleyball professionally since 2013,” said Mercado-de Koenigswarter, who formally announced her pregnancy on Mother’s Day.
“So ngayong 30 years-old na ako parang naisip ko parang this is the next chapter of my life na, motherhood, focus on my family,” she added.
Still, Mercado-de Koenigswarter hopes to lace up her volleyball shoes once again.
“Pero hindi ko tinatanggal ‘yung thought of returning sa paglalaro ng volleyball,” said the veteran hitter. “Kasi ‘yan ang first love eh. Ang dami kong pinagdaanan playing volleyball.”
However, as for when she will rejoin the reigning Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference champions, Angels, remains uncertain.
“We don’t know yet,” said the daughter of former Asia’s Sprint Queen, Lydia de Vega-Mercado. “We’ll see kung makakabalik pa ako ng volleyball, kung kaya pa ng katawan ko.”
PetroGazz, which finished runner-up to Creamline in the Open Conference, remains a strong contender once the PVL opens its fourth season late this year once the government gives greenlight to sports activities to resume.
The Angels in the offseason signed wing spikers Grethcel Soltones and Jerrili Malabanan, who are both very capable of filling in the shoes left by Mercado-de Koenigswarter.
