MANILA, Philippines – Sports has always found a spot in Volcanoes member Kenneth Stern’s heart. The Fil-American hunk working in real estate remembers getting into it in high school back in Connecticut. He played American football until finally foraying into rugby, where he stayed on for the rest of his life.
“My high school football coach was also the rugby coach, so he got a few of us to play during the off season—and I fell in love with the sport,” he says. “Sports has always been a big part of my life.”
Not only does Kenneth put high regard to rugby and sports in general because of how it has kept him fit over time (He goes to the gym and does anything “physical” to stay in shape.), but it has also become his lifestyle, molding his personality and character further as he got more serious in the sport.
“Sports teaches teamwork, commitment, determination and how to deal with success and failure,” he says. “It is important for kids to play sports, as it gives them many life lessons that will shape them as a person.”
This is why he is so intent on helping boost rugby here in the country. He fulfills this by coaching the Makati Mavericks, a youth rugby training camp sponsored by real estate firm CBRE Philippines; and by playing for the Volcanoes, who defeated Singapore in the Asian Rugby Championships semifinals at the Sports Stadium in Bulacan last Wednesday, May 6.
