Filipino table tennis paddlers bombed out of the doubles competition medal race.
Richard Gonzales scored a quick 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 win over Thavisack Phathaphone of Laos in the opening day of the 28th Southeast Asian Games table tennis men’s singles competition but two Philippine doubles teams fell short Monday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Gonzales then teamed up with Rodel Valle to take another victory in the doubles match against Malaysians Chun Cheun Wong Chee Feng Leong, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, but the Pinoy tandem fell victim to host Singapore pair of Feng Chen and Zhe Yu Chew, 13-11, 6-11, 6-11, 4-11, in their second outing of the day.
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles team of Sendrina Balatbat and 77th UAAP Athlete of the Year Ian Lariba of De La Salle let a 2-1 match lead slip away and suffered a rude awakening at the hands of Indonesians Gustin Dwijayanti and Kharisma Hawwa, 11-6, 13-15, 12-20, 8-11, 5-11.
Both the PHI men’s and women’s double teams bowed out of medal contention.
Gonzales will face Ficky Supit Santoso of Indonesia next on Tuesday in the men’s singles while Ryan Jacolo takes on Thailand’s Padasak Tanvirayave.
Balatbat will open her singles campaign against Hoang My Trang Mai of Vietnam while Lariba is up against Tianwei Feng of Singapore.
The mixed doubles team of Lariba and Valle will face Thailand while Balatbat and Jacolo are set to play against Laos Monday night.
