National University and Global FC standout Paolo Salenga recorded his second international goal of the year, but that was all the U23 Azkals could muster, as they fell to Cambodia, 3-1 in their second outing in the 2015 SEA Games football tournament.
The young Azkals looked to carry the momentum of their spirited opening performance against Singapore Monday evening, but the Cambodian U23 squad got off to a hot start in the first half, thanks to an opening goal from midfielder Prak Mony Udom in the 30th minute.
With just four minutes to go before the midgame break, Keo Sokpheng doubled the Cambodia lead with a tip in from after the Azkals were not able to safely clear the ball on a previous goal attempt.
The U23 Azkals looked to bounce back in the second half, and Salenga provided what hope to be a spark for the Pinoys, scoring one in the 51st minute off an assist by Kennedy Uzoka, cutting the deficit to just a single goal.
Unfortunately, it was the Cambodian side that was able to find another conversion as Chan Vathanaka put the final touch on the match with a goal in the 81st minute.
The U23 Azkals are now 0-2 in their first two outings, but can still look forward to matches against Myanmar on June 7 and Indonesia on June 9.
Myanmar, Cambodia, and host-nation Singapore all have three points in Group A of the SEA Games football standings, while Indonesia and the Philippines have yet to record any points.
