Warriors or Cavaliers? Pinoy SEA Games athletes place their bets.

SINGAPORE --- Even Filipino athletes here for the 28th Southeast Asian Games are struck by NBA Finals fever.

Stephen Curry and Golden State Warriors outlasted LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in Game One of their best-of-seven championship series, 108-100, in overtime Friday.

Too bad most of our Pinoy and Pinay bets missed the game.

“Sayang wala kasing NBA sa cable namin sa kwarto. Buti na lang may kaibigan ako na nasabi sa akin sa Viber nung result,” said Rubilen Amit, top gold medal potential in women’s 9-ball singles.

“Ever since bago pa man pumutok si Stephen Curry idol ko na talaga yun. Good thing nanalo sila,” added Amit, the 2013 Myanmar SEA Games silver medalist, in a conversation with ABS-CBN Sports at the Pan Pacific Hotel where the billiards and snookers team are staying.

Rubilen Amit for Golden State:

Caleb Stuart, the celebrated Filipino-American thrower who is expected to deliver mints in hammer, discus and shot put, is a Cleveland die-hard.

“I’ve put my bet on the Cavaliers and I’m pretty sure the Cavs will go all the way,” said Stuart, who also missed a chance to watch the game.

Stuart for Cleveland:

Marathon legend Vertek Buenavista, who is scheduled to take the road on Sunday, also puts his bet on the Cavaliers.

“Maliit lang naman (ang tayaan). Kami-kami lang,” said Buenavista, who like Stuart and the rest of the athletics team which promised to bring home eight to 12 gold medals is staying in Swissotel.

Buenavista for Cleveland:

Though united in giving honor to the country, rookie fencing medalists Justine Gail Tinio and Nathaniel Perez are on the other side of the NBA Finals.

“Idol ko si LeBron. Go Cavaliers!” shouted the women’s foil silver medalist Tinio.

Tinio for Cleveland:

But University of the East fencing star Perez believes this will be the Golden State’s year.

“Warriors na yan!” said Perez from one Warrior to another.

Perez for Golden State:

Game Two of the NBA Finals is on Monday and can be seen on ABS-CBN Channel 2.
