SINGAPORE—Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose Cojuangco Jr. expressed enthusiasm in hosting the 2019 Southeast Asian Games stressing that doing so would be nothing less than an act of patriotism.
“It’s more of patriotism,” Cojuangco said on Sunday at the Philippine Secretariat at the Swissotel here. “If we don’t do it, then we don’t have any trust and confidence on our capability as Filipinos.”
Cojuangco added: “If we passed up on this one, then they will think there is something wrong with us, with our country. The offer is there, so let’s grab it.”
Brunei was scheduled to host the 2019 Games but told the Sea Games Federation meeting two days ago that it is withdrawing from the responsibility. Brunei officials did not specify the reason for the withdrawal.
Brunei also begged off from hosting the 2017 Games, awarding the chores to Malaysia instead. The 2019 Games were offered to the Philippines and Thailand.
Cojuangco said that if plans push through for a national training center in Clark in Pampanga, then the Philippines could ably host the 2019 Games. He also mentioned the Philippine Arena in Bulacan as a logical competition venue.
The Philippines have hosted the Games thrice—1981, 1991 and 2005. Competitions for the 2005 edition, where the Philippines finished overall champion for the first time, were staged in Metro Manila, Subic, Bacolod and Cebu City.
