Can the young golfers claim SEA Games glory?
SINGAPORE—A bunch of youngsters none older than 19 set out for the golf competition of the 28th Southeast Asian Games beginning on Tuesday at the posh Sentosa Golf Club.
First out is the men’s—or boys’—team, whose average age is 17—Dan Emilio Cruz (19), Weiwei Gao (15), Aniceto Hermenegildo Mandanas (15) and Rupert Zaragoza III (17).
The women, or girls, who will start play on Wednesday are even younger—Bianca Isabel Pagdanganan is 17, Lou Danielle Uy 18 and Harmie Nicole Constantino is only 13.
Despite their young age, all seven golfers underwent tryouts set by the National Golf Associaition of the Philippines.
Absent is defending women’s gold medalist Princess Superal, who missed the tryouts because of her commitments abroad. But Superal sent her best wishes for the team.
“I wish the team good luck and I wished I was there to defend my title and lead the Philippines again to the gold,” said Superal who led a gold medal sweep by the Philippines in women’s play at the 2013 Myanmar Games.
The men play 54 holes while the women compete over 36 holes.
Defending champion Thailand has also overhauled its team with only Myanmar veteran Natiphon Srithong returning.
