Dennis Orcollo completes SEA Games billiards sweep
Dennis Orcollo overcame a sluggish start to dump upset-conscious Maung Maung of Myanmar, 9-4, to retain his men’s 9-ball crown on Wednesday in the 28th Singapore Southeast Asian Games billiards championships at the OCBC Arena here.
Trailing 1-3 after the first four frames, Orcollo began his rally after Maung scratched on the 9-ball in the fifth rack to narrow the gap at 2-3, and surged ahead in winning all of the remaining frames as Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia watched in delight.
“Medyo sinuwerte, kasi magaling yong kalaban,” Orcollo, said. “Medyo masama lang kamada noon umpisa.”
It was the fourth SEA Games gold medal that the 36-year-old Bislig, Surigao del Sur native won dating back to the 2011 Indonesia SEA Games.Â
With the victory the Filipino cue aces swept all of the golds in billiards play, counting the men’s 9-ball championship won by Carlos Biado and Warren Kiamco and Chezka Centeno in the women’s 9-ball singles.
They also had one silver medal from Rubilen Amit, who lost in the finals to Centeno, and five bronzes in snooker at the close of the five-day competition.
