SINGAPORE -- Danica Jose, one of the key stalwart of the national women's basketball team, draws perfection from criticisms.
And she doesn't have to look far to find his biggest critic.
"Whenever my dad watches me play, as much as possible, he's going to say something mostly on the negative side," said Jose, referring to his father, former PBA star Bobby Jose, he taught her the tricks of the trade.
"He's not going to praise me. You can't expect that from him. The way he criticizes me, it helps me improve a lot. My dad knows what he's saying because he's a former basketball player."
True enough, Jose is shining brightly in his dad's game.
After leading a rag-tag national youth squad to a memorable run in an Asian tournament in 2009, Jose brought her wares to Ateneo de Manila University, where she starred in the UAAP, winning two Mythical Team award.
Then, in the 28th Southeast Asian Games here, Jose's star power continues to sparkle as she plays a crucial role in the rotation of Nationals coach Patrick Aquino.
Some say that she's the future of women's basketball, others say that she's the face of the Philippine women's team.
But resting on her laurel is not an option.
"My dad says I have to be confident with my shots," she said. "I have to be ready to shoot from the outside kasi hindi lahat pwedeng mag-close out sa akin. I have to be a threat and unpredictable to the opposing team."
