The Philippines has won the men's basketball crown 17 out of 18 times in the Southeast Asian Games.
SINGAPORE—After a day’s rest, the national men’s basketball team plunges into Sunday’s crossover semifinals as the heavy favorite over Thailand in the 28th Southeast Asian Games.
Sinag Pilipinas, the cadet team of the Gilas program, faces the Thais at 6 p.m. at the OCBC Arena. The other semifinal pits host Singapore against Indonesia at 8 p.m.
The Philippines swept Group I in dominant fashion—81-52 against Indonesia, 100-48 against Malaysia and 126-121 against Timor Leste.
Marcus Douthit was not deployed against lowly East Timor but head coach Tab Baldwin is expected to field the six-foot-10 naturalized player against the Thais for insurance purposes.
Practically everyone on Sinag Pilipinas has delivered in these games, giving the Philippines the tag as the "Goliath" in Sea Games basketball.
The Philippines is eyeing its 11th straight —17th overall—men’s basketball crown. It was only in 1989 when the Philippines lost the basketball gold to Malaysia.
