Mamaya madisgrasya pa doon (sa tryouts) eh. Maganda ‘yung (pagkatapos ng) practice pahinga na -- San Sebastian College and National University coach Roger Gorayeb
The women’s national team could lose talents Grethcel Soltones and Jaja Santiago after San Sebastian College and National University head coach Roger Gorayeb announced that he will not allow his players to attend the tryouts for the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Gorayeb, who handled the national squad in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games, said that he wanted his players to focus in the 92nd NCAA championship and for the 79th UAAP opening than to attend the tryouts scheduled by the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. this weekend.
“Hindi ko rin papayagan muna (ang mga players ko sa Baste). Focus muna kami rito sa NCAA. (Kahit sa NU) maaring ganoon din kasi mago-opening na (ang UAAP),” said Gorayeb, who was surprisingly not in the LVPI shortlist of coaches considered for the job.
This would mean that Lady Stags star hitter Soltones and Lady Bulldogs tower Santiago, who both played in the last edition of the biennial meet, will skip the Manila leg of the national team tryouts on January 28, 29 and 31 at the Arellano University gym in Taft.
National team head coach Francis Vicente earlier announced that all aspiring players including the big names and former members of the national squad all need to undergo the three-day selection process.
As for San Sebastian and NU players the chance of representing the country in the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship in Manila on August 9 to 17 and the SEA Games on August 19 to 31 might not be an option for now.
Gorayeb’s concern is to keep his teams ready for the NCAA Finals and for the UAAP, which will open on February 4 where NU will face University of the East.
“Pero sa ngayon kasi may NCAA at UAAP pa so focus muna kami d’yan,” said Gorayeb, whose Lady Stags completed a 9-game sweep of the NCAA eliminations to advance outright in the Finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage. “Mamaya madisgrasya pa doon (sa tryouts) eh. Maganda ‘yung (pagkatapos ng) practice pahinga na.”
He added that he already scheduled a training session for the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, which will fall on the first day of the tryouts.
“Magpa-practice ako sa Sabado hindi pwedeng hindi malapit na kami (sa UAAP), tulad niyan tatlong araw na akong wala doon. Noong Lunes meron ako dito (sa NCAA), kahapon may shoot sila, ngayon nandito ako (ulit sa NCAA),” he said.
LVPI also set provincial tryouts in Cebu and Davao on February, which will fall on the month where NCAA is on its final stretch and with UAAP’s first round of action.
