Marathon bet Tabal delivers Team Philippines' first gold

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia --- Team Philippines captured its first gold medal in the 29th Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games courtesy of Mary Joy Tabal in women’s marathon Saturday.
The Rio Olympian set the pace early and dominated the rest of the way to breeze into the finish line to break the ice in the country’s quest to collect mints and surpass the 29 gold medals the Philippines collected in the Singapore edition of the biennial in 20015.

The Cebuana bet crossed the finish line with a clocking of 2 hours, 48 minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Vietnamese runner Thi Thanh Hoang (2:55.43) and 2015 gold medalist Natthaya Thanaronnawat of Thailand (2:48.17).
The 28-year-old Tabal, who trained in Italy and Switzerland, improved her silver medal finish two years ago when she finished with 3:04.39..

While Tabal crossed the finish line, men’s marathon bet Jeson Agravante suffered cramps a few kilometers from the finish line and was escorted to an emergency ambulance.
