The Philippine national men's volleyball team surrendered to Vietnam in straight sets.
KUALA LUMPUR --- The Philippine national men’s volleyball team suffered an early setback in the 29th Southeast Asian Games after bowing down to powerhouse Vietnam, 19-25, 21-25, 20-25, Monday in Group B at MITEC Hall 11 here.
Pitted against the 2015 silver medalists and well-experienced Vietnamese, the Filipinos gave a gallant stand and even held the lead for a brief period in the third set only to fade in the closing stretch.
Down, 0-2, in the match, the PHI squad behind the efforts of Ranran Abdilla and Bryan Bagunas raced to a 16-13 lead but the Vietnamese countered with four unanswered points to take the helm, 17-16.
The PHI closed the gap, 19-20, only to see Vietnam pull away with four straight points including back-to-back errors from short off speed attacks by Abdilla and Bagunas.
The Filipinos saved a match point but Vietnam sealed the win with a blinding attack at the middle.
PHI will take on Indonesia, the 2015 bronze medal winner, on Wednesday.
