Six gold medals at stake for eSports in 2019 SEA Games
Final game titles are yet to be decided but there will be six gold medals at stake with two games allotted for PC, two for mobile, and another two for consoles.

It's truly the dawn of a new era in sports.

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila will feature eSports as an official medal event.

In a press conference Wednesday at the Marriott Hotel in Resorts World, the announcement was made official with Razer serving as partner. eSports is recognized as a medal event for the first time in history for the 2019 showcase featuring 11 countries.

Final game titles are yet to be decided but there will be six gold medals at stake with two games allotted for PC, two for mobile, and another two for consoles.

“The Philippines is the first host country to stage an eSports tournament as a medal event. This lends credence to professional gaming as a true world-class sporting contest, as it engages a new generation of gaming fans," PhilSCOG Chaiman Emeritus Alan Peter Cayetano said.

"In this modern world and in reality, those who play eSports, the gamers, are as much as athletes as anyone else," he added.

Also part of the press conference Wednesday is the announcement of Razer as the official eSports partner for the SEA Games.

As the world's leading brand in eSports, Razer has 18 champion teams with players from 25 countries.

Razer will help out with almost everything in eSports for the SEA Games, including providing support with its ecosystem hardware, software, and other general services.

They will also partner with PhilSGOC to discuss toeh possible game titles that will be featured in the SEA Gmes.

"eSports has been the essence of Razer ever since we were founded," co-founder and Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said in a statement.

"The sportsmanship and fighting spirit seen in eSports is no less than that of other sports, and we've fought hard for its inclusion in an international sporting event like the SEA Games 2019," he added.
