The POC is apparently working on a solution for its internal issues (FILE photo).
A week after internal issues rocked the Philippine Olympic Commission, its president Ricky Vargas allayed fears that the Philippines’ hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games is in jeopardy.
In particular, Vargas re-assured Filipino athletes that the regional meet remains on track. “I hope to meet each and every one of our athletes, time-permitting, to be able to talk to them and assure them we are ok, the POC is ok,” he said in the organizers’ assessment meeting, Tuesday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila.
A week ago, the POC president sacked several members of the board during a heated general assembly after having lost trust and confidence in them.
Now, however, they are apparently in the process of resolving their internal issues. As Vargas put it, “Let me tell you now, common friends and some NSA (national sports agency) leadership are trying to help broker a discussion. I’m most willing to do that so that we work out a plan so we can all work together.”
He then continued, “(We hope to) answer the questions that need to be answered so that we are assured that the POC is ok.”
At the same time, the POC president shared that they are working on something to fuel the fire of Filipino athletes even more. “For whatever it’s worth, I’ve also spoken to our politicians and to the private sector to work on a reward system to all athletes that bring home gold,” he shared.
