Phisgoc transfers volleyball venue to Ninoy Aquino Stadium
Volleyball in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games will be transferred to a new competition venue according to organizing committee chief operating officer Ramon 'Tats' Suzara.

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games volleyball will be played at the Ninoy Aquino instead of the earlier announced venue at the PhilSports Arena.

Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc), Foundation chief operating officer Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara on Thursday said that they are making a few changes in competition venue three months before the opening of the biennial meet.

The crowd-drawing sport, which will begin on November 28 two days before the formal opening of the Games, will now be held the venue inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. Phisgoc earlier announced that volleyball will be played at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City following some reservation problems with the initially proposed Araneta Coliseum venue.

“We made the decision yesterday (Wednesday) because gymnastics really needs a big space,” Suzara told ABS-CBN Sports. “It’s one of our important sports also gymnastics because we’re getting medals there. So we’re putting gymnastics sa Ultra.”

Taekwondo and weightlifting are supposed to be held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

“Volleyball will be moved to Ninoy Aquino Stadium while taekwondo and weightlifting will be at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum because this is based on the technical specifications of the fields of play,” said Suzara.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. official and national volleyball team program head Peter Cayco welcomed the change of venue.

“Phisgoc together with POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) and PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) should know what is best and doable under the present circumstances. We will play no matter where. Laban para sa bayan,” said Cayco in a text message.

Medal-rich gymnastics (artistic, rhythmic and aerobic) is originally billed at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum

“We have to find solutions for gymnastics because for many months we couldn’t find a big space for gymnastics,” said Suzara. “With the new regulations kailangan malaki talaga kung Philippine Arena masyado naman malaki para sa kanila. Again yung ingress kasi ng equipment ng gymnastics, it takes a week.”

Other changes in game venues include obstacle course sports and petanque, which are both originally reserved at the Clark Global City. The University of the Philippines Sunken Garden will host obstacle course while petanque will be transferred to a different venue in Clark.
