Pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena earned a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after clearing 5.81 meters in the Salto Con L'asta meet in Piazza Chiari, Italy late Tuesday.
Obiena, the reigning Asian champion, became the first Filipino to qualify for next year’s Games and even broke his personal best of 5.76 meters. According to Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico, the Olympic qualifying standard for men's pole vault is 5.80 meters.
April this year, Obiena ended the Philippines’ 10-year gold medal drought after ruling the event in the Asian Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Three months after, the 23-year old Obiena cleared 5.76 meters to capture the mint in the 30th Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy.
